Campus Sustainability Report 2023-2024: Cultivating a Living Lab

Lafayette’s campus operates as a living laboratory, providing students and faculty the opportunity to conduct research and explore and test new models of sustainable systems.

Hands-on learning experiences prepare our students to think critically and become engaged citizens ready to confront the social, economic and environmental challenges of the future.

Applied Learning

This year, students across multiple disciplines studied topics of sustainability from Environmental Studies and Science, Economics, Engineering, English, to Biology and more.

A Campus as Lab webpage was developed for ongoing availability of data and materials. This tool highlights student leaders, builds connections within departments, supports faculty across various disciplines, and generates resources and research.

Over 60% of courses offered are with sustainability-focused or inclusive content

Research

2/3 of departments are conducting sustainability research

Research and Scholarship

Over 20 years of research and collaboration among Wildlands Conservancy, numerous government agencies, conservation organizations and faculty at Lafayette led to removal of dams in Bushkill Creek to support local ecosystems including freshwater mussels. This project demonstrated environmental stewardship and offered rich interdisciplinary collaborations, bringing together faculty and students in Biology, Civil and Integrative Engineering, Geology, and Economics
