Every April, we celebrate and educate on sustainability initiatives and themes throughout the month in recognition of Earth Day.

Sustainability is intertwined into many disciplines, themes, and ideas. During Earth Month in April, our campus community brings these themes together to showcase the importance of sustainability education and initiatives in recognition of Earth Day.

Earth Month is underway! Make sure to show support to our clubs, departments and organizations in April with sustainability elements or themes. Events range from speaker presentations, to activities, to celebrations and more. Get involved to learn and engage with the Lafayette and local community.

Tiny Gardens Everywhere

Acclaimed MIT historian Kate Brown speaks about her new book, Tiny Gardens Everywhere: The Past, Present, and Future of the Self-Provisioning City. The book follows the roots of urban gardening from feudal England to a late nineteenth century utopia outside of Berlin to 1960s Washington DC to contemporary Amsterdam, Chicago, and beyond. Throughout this history, Brown weaves in her own gardening experience, exploring the political and the practical while painting a picture of the necessity of self-provisioning in an increasingly chaotic world. It's a book about ecological possibility, political hope, and the recovery and growth of fertile environmental grounds all around us. Engineering alum Alec Bernstein '11 will describe his career in international development, water access, and building resilience in the face of change. As an active member of Engineers Without Borders and a Fulbright Fellow living in India, Alec gained first‑hand insight into what makes development efforts sustainable. Since then, he has led multidisciplinary teams on climate and water projects across South Asia, Sub‑Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. Throughout his career, Alec has held a variety of roles, but his work consistently centers on assessing how a changing climate affects infrastructure, social, and environmental systems. We will conclude Woven Together with a community event to plant native crops on ancestral land at LaFarm and send them to the Delaware Nation in Oklahoma, symbolically returning native foods to their original stewards and cultural traditions. We will gather at LaFarm to plant native crops on ancestral land, tending to the same soil used by Indigenous peoples for generations.
