Waste, Reuse and Recycling Team

Kyle Low ’20

Kyle, a rising Civil Engineering junior from Baltimore, spearheaded environmental projects right as he walked onto campus as a first year student. He has interned for GreenAllies, a non-profit connecting regional environmental groups within higher education, and helped to organize their 2018 conference. In 2017, Kyle worked with the Sustainability Office as the Green Move Out Student Coordinator. That year, we collected over 10,000 lbs of clothing, food, and recyclables. His plethora of environmental initiatives have been incorporated into Office and club programming. Kyle also spends his time on the staff of the Marquis Literary Magazine and in the Theater Improv club. We're thrilled to have him on the ECOreps team.

Alexander Homsi '19

Alex’s enthusiasm for travel and entrepreneurship helped to form his ECOreps project this semester: researching and piloting a bike share program at Lafayette. A mechanical engineering major, resident adviser, teaching assistant, and brother of Delta Upsilon from Syria, Alex also hopes to launch a sustainable startup after graduation. Fun fact: Alex is, “working on implementing a bike share program at Lafayette but [he has] yet to learn how to ride one!”

Emma Leeds '19

From researching the nitrogen management of municipal waste compost to organizing educational children's workshops, Emma has an extensive background in both the hard and social science aspects to solving environmental ills. Her dedication to campus sustainability has not gone unnoticed: she's been spotted at every event, volunteer opportunity, and Green Move Out pick-up. This semester, Emma assisted in planning a canoe cleanup for Fall 2018 along the Lehigh River with the Wildlands Conservancy.

Zoe Peerman '20

To Zoe, education on how to live sustainably needs to be coupled with education on why it’s necessary to care about our environment. Zoe double majors in International Affairs and Environmental Studies, and also high jumps for the track team, works at Lafayette’s gym, and helps at various sporting events. As an ECOrep, Zoe organizes clean-ups and other volunteer opportunities that involve all sectors of campus to make an impact.

Ava Shore '19

An Engineering Studies major and Psychology minor from Pennsylvania, Ava is looking into ways to promote reusable water bottles and to make using them a norm on campus. Drinking from a reusable bottle is one simple way to cut plastic waste. “People don’t realize how easy it is to make small switches in their lifestyles to help our environment,” says Ava, “and I’d like to help people make that switch.” Ava is co-president of Take Back the Tap, a sister of Alpha Gamma Delta, and a student researcher at Lafayette.

Josh Kline '19

Josh recognizes that nearly half our country’s food is thrown out, yet many without means still go hungry; he’s worked closely with other students to pilot a food recovery program on campus to address it. A Film & Media Studies and Environmental Studies double major, Josh is involved with various environmental clubs on campus and is a brother of Phi Kappa Psi.

Caroline Shaffer '19

A childhood love of fluffy polar bears may have sparked Caroline’s passion for sustainability. A Policy Studies major focused on the intersectionality of inequality and environmental issues, Caroline sees living sustainably as a moral responsibility. She’s a sister of Alpha Phi and a research scholar for the Gov & Law department. Caroline is working with Josh in the ECOreps program to coordinate new events that attract and educate all members of campus.

Silvia Chilel Martin '20

A Biology major and English minor from Chicago, Silvia is interested in sustainability as it relates to her fields of study - and how climate change may affect them in the future. As an ECOrep, Silvia promotes and assists in environmentally-related campus events, and is working to plan an original America Recycles Day interactive art piece.

Jen's excitement about both the environment and literature is palpable: she heads the food and farm co-op club, participates in LEAP initiatives, and practically lives in the English department at Lafayette. This year, Jen is showcasing environmental leaders on campus with write-ups for the Sustainability Office website.

Addie, a Chemistry major from Doylestown, Pennsylvania, has assisted the Sustainability Office in its Climate Action Plan this semester by researching student behavior and auditing campus buildings. She's passionate about sustainable life choices, food and farm, plastic pollution, and a slew of other environmental topics of interest.

Lara Henderson ’19

A Government & Law and Environmental Studies double major from Massachusetts, Lara’s background in sustainability stems from her interest in environmental justice and natural disasters. She’s part of the Alpine ski team, outdoors society, and college Democrats on campus. Lara is looking forward to being back on campus after a semester abroad in Copenhagen to explore a global view on renewable energy and policy making.

Jane Fergusson '21

Math majors don't always dabble in the arts, but Jane's experience as a camp counselor gave her the skills to make our Sustainability Office vibrant. Jane is from Richmond, Virginia, and focuses on the ways in which natural environment illustration fosters mindfulness for the outdoors that many might not have experienced before. Jane designs signage, informational posters, and artwork for sustainability initiatives across Lafayette's campus.
