Lafayette is committed to achieving a 40% diversion rate from the landfill by 2030 and 60% by 2035. Part of our diversion away from the landfill includes collecting and composting food waste.

Lafayette collects food waste from both dining halls.

Food waste from back of house food prep and front of house plate waste is collected. Lafayette also collects food waste at certain on-campus events, through Sustainable Office Program participants, and through Eco Reps in select residence halls. The food waste is brought to our composting vessel where it is mixed with brown waste to create a compost product that can be brought to our campus farm and shared with other community partners.

This program helps complete the cycle of our Sustainable Food Loop on campus. Learn more about our Sustainable Food Loop.
